Developing the requirements for lubricants in water distribution systems

During the last few years, some microbiological problems with coliform bacteria and increased colony counts could be referred to the use of lubricants. The lubricants are an essential constructive part in lots of fittings that are used in drinking water systems. The requirements for lubricants in Germany so far are defined in the “UBA-Schmierstoffleitlinie”. In these, there are no microbiological requirements included.

The influence of lubricants consists of a long-term elution of soluble organics into the water under stagnant conditions with discontinuous oxygen- and fresh water-addition.

This research project aims at developing a test procedure with practical relevance to quantify the potential of a lubricant to promote microbial growth in the water.
