Abstract:

The TZW joined the Integrated Project entitled “Technology Enabled Universal Access to Safe Water” (TECHNEAU) funded by the European Commission. Within this project thirty international partners from all over Europe and developing countries have been involved. TECHNEAU developed and demonstrated adaptive supply system options as well as new and improved supply, monitoring technologies and management practices. Practices for risk assessment/risk management, operation, maintenance and models for consumer acceptance constitute the framework for treatment and monitoring technologies.

The TZW department of Groundwater & Soil contributed to Work Area 4 “Risk Assessment / Risk Management”. The Generic framework for risk assessment considers aspects of WHO's Water Safety Plan (WSP). Within WA 4 we focused on the source water systems, especially groundwater. As a first step, selected water suppliers have been interviewed and results concerning currently used risk assessment methods and the status of risk assessment and risk management in German water supply have been reported to the project partners in Work Area 4.

Within a common framework of hazard identification, integrated risk management, and risk evaluation, TZW applied and adapted a catchment oriented risk assessment method using geographic information systems (GIS). This GIS based approach has been tested at a case study site, focusing on risks for groundwater quality. In addition to the case study, literature with regard to the application of GIS techniques in mapping hazards and assessing risks for source water systems has been collected and reviewed.

Furthermore, a research of hazards in source water systems, groundwater abstraction sites and groundwater infiltration has been carried out. The results contributed to the so called “TECHNEAU Hazard Data Base“ (THDB) that has been developed in the project’s framework of identifying and describing hazards for water supply from ‘source to tap’. This information also contributed to a catalogue of risk reduction options and the ‘TECHNEAU Risk Reduction Database’. TZW worked on the catalogues’ sections concerning groundwater catchments, groundwater abstraction and infiltration sites.

Ongoing TZW activities, papers and reviews have been presented and discussed at several project meetings in the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany.
